Causes

Yeast infections can be caused by a variety of things. A yeast infection can be caused by new yeast entering the vaginal area. A yeast infection, however, can occur when the amount of yeast which already exists in the vagina increases. Antibiotics taken for other ailments may result in a yeast infection. In the instance where the inner vagina is harmed (potential side effect of chemotherapy), a woman may develop a vulnerability to yeast infections also. Women who are taking birth control pills, are pregnant, have a suppressed immune system or have diabetes mellitus have a greater chance of contracting a yeast infection than other women.
