Although medical consumers enthusiastically embrace a wide array of therapies, from natural medicine to psychotherapy, they often feel that they are on their own when it’s time to add to conventional care. Most medical doctors seem ill at ease with alternatives or frankly admit to knowing little about them. Patients may be reluctant to turn to their primary care providers for advice. On the other hand, consumers know that they need to exercise good judgment when they choose practitioners and remedies from complementary sources. They understand that drugs and herbs can work at cross purposes and they are willing to research the various ways to combine kinds of care that are easily available, regulated, or well-known with those that are not. Here are a few tips for adding complementary therapies to your medical care in an intelligent way:

• Even if you risk disapproval, it’s important to share your plans with all your practitioners. Psychological and primary medical providers may need to discuss medication or symptoms; osteopathic and orthopedic doctors may unknowingly repeat each other’s diagnostic tests or treatments; professionals who have already have established relationships with providers in your field of interest can make suggestions; your pharmacist is a wonderful source of advice. These professionals truly have a need to know — often for the sake of your safety.

• If your request results in turf battles or your healing professionals are unable to treat your decision with respect, you may need to find people who are more willing to be open to cooperating with each other.

• Although you may not be completely satisfied with certain aspects of orthodox medicine, don’t dismiss its advantages. Be sure you give objective consideration to diagnostic testing, inoculation, surgery, and chemical control of symptoms while you’re assessing what’s best for you. It doesn’t make sense to throw out the baby with the bath water.

• Remember that herbs, vitamin supplements, and other natural substances are not free of side effects and require careful monitoring, especially in large doses. They are often not tested or regulated by the Federal Drug Administration

• If your ailment is related to stress or to predominantly psychological factors, consider alternatives to biomedicine. Biofeedback, psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic hypnosis, meditation, and various forms of exercise may be safer and provide relief more effectively than drugs. Chronic illness, pain, and the side effects of treatment such as chemotherapy may also respond to these kinds of therapies.

• Consider the addition of non-traditional elements such as positive imaging to surgical procedures. They may reduce discomfort and speed healing. Enlist the help of your surgeon in these efforts.

• Utilize the many sources of information about all kinds of medicine available on-line, in library reference sections, and through commercial databases. Hook up with groups of people whose concerns reflect yours. Don’t reinvent the wheel! In recent years our resources for health care have been enriched by the addition of many alternatives. You can influence your health care by choosing from those available to you, but it’s up to you to be sure that they really do complement each other.

It was a scientist named Leonard Hayflick who discovered that most normal human cell types lose their ability to divide and ultimately die after undergoing a limited number of cell divisions.

Such cells contain no active telomerase, an enzyme required to maintain chromosome stability in dividing cells.

In contrast, most cancer cells have an unlimited ability to undergo cell division, and these “immortal” cells almost always contain measurably active telomerase, which they produce continuously.

“We are successfully exploiting this difference between normal cells and cancer cells to detect the presence of cancer cells in the prostate gland,” says Richard E. Beltz, PhD, emeritus professor of biochemistry, School of Medicine.

Dr. Beltz is a member of a research group that recently published several in a series of articles on its research in the professional journal Urologic Oncology. The first article is titled “Detection of telomerase activity in prostatic fluid specimens” .

George R. Prout Jr., editor in chief of the journal, commented on the article, saying “The article entitled ‘Detection of telomerase activity in prostatic fluid specimens’ by Wang et al. is a very clever paper, and the results strongly suggest that we’ll be using this in the clinic in the not too distant future.”

A second article, “Telomerase activity in sextant needle cores from radical prostatectomy specimens,” Urologic Oncology has also been published and a third in the series is being prepared.

Scientists contributing to the research and preparation of the journal articles include individuals from the School of Medicine department of biochemistry and the Loma Linda University Medical Center department of surgery’s division of urology.

“Our studies have shown that telomerase assays [measurements] performed on prostatic fluid could play an important role in the detection of prostate cancer,” Dr. Beltz explains. “Unfortunately, the method we employed for measuring telomerase activity requires radioactive material and apparatus that are not suitable for clinical laboratory use.”

The challenge, he continues, is to develop a new telomerase assay method, which is usable in a clinical setting and is comparable to or better than the original method in accuracy and precision.

“A second challenge,” Dr. Beltz adds, “is to investigate other urogenital fluids, more easily obtainable than prostatic fluid, as potential clinical specimens for prostate cancer diagnosis. Research is now proceeding along these lines.”

“He continues research as an active emeritus professor in collaboration with George Javor, PhD, professor of biochemistry,” indicates Clifford Herrmann, PhD, associate professor and acting chair, department of biochemistry/microbiology, School of Medicine. “A poster describing some of their results was presented at the May, 2006, meeting of the American Society of Microbiology.”

In addition to lecturing to medical students through the years, Dr. Beltz has served as facilitator in the problem-based learning setting with small groups of first-year medical students.

…continued
Colds and flu are caused by viruses and not by bacteria. Antibiotics do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING against viruses. That’s right – ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. It is possible to be so sick with a virus that you can’t fight off your normal resident bacteria and develop a secondary bacterial infection and for that you need antibiotics, but 99% of the time, you have to get over a virus all by yourself. If you go to the clinic and your health care provider gives you a prescription for antibiotics for a cold or flu, you’ll feel better in the same 10 days that you would have if you had not spent the money and took Tylenol and drank lots of liquids.

Now, here’s the problem. Since bacteria are living creatures like us, and because there are zillions of them inside your body when you have an infection, when you take your prescription antibiotics, you begin to kill them off by the thousands. Thousands gone, zillions left. Like any other organism, bacteria have diverse genetic material. Not every offspring of every strep bacterium has the same genetics. They evolve, they mutate, they change. One in a bazillion will have some genetic mutation that protects that bacterium from death by penicillin.

Here you are, taking your antibiotics and you start to feel better and you quit taking the pills. Bad decision. Not all of the bacteria are dead yet and besides, one or two of them have figured out that this stuff can’t kill them. Now, most of the time your own defenses will kill those few super-bugs. Sometimes your infection will come back because you didn’t take all of your pills. Other times you will not feel sick but you will be going through your day sliming your friends, acquaintances, and co-workers with antibiotic resistant bacteria from your skin. Think about that the next time you shake hands with your new client.

We now have super bugs that are resistant to not one, not two, but a whole host of expensive products of the pharmaceutical industry. Now we can look forward to the day when we are elderly and debilitated and suffer a simple infection with a bacterium that causes pneumonia and THERE WILL BE NO ANTIBIOTIC TO FIGHT IT. The reason there will be no treatment will be because people did not take all of their antibiotics in years gone by, or they saved them and took them a year later, or they passed a partial prescription to a family member, and the resistant bugs reproduced themselves by the millions.

The point here is to ALWAYS take all of your prescription antibiotics even though you feel better. Do not save pills for another day. Do not give antibiotics to anyone else. And finally, never buy those “antibacterial” soaps and cleaning products. Bacteria are everywhere and they should be. A high school girl in California performed a Science Fair project a few years ago that proved that the use of such soaps and cleaning products produced antibiotic resistant bacteria in a very short time. All of us should be very frightened by her conclusions. Every home in America has been turned into a laboratory that is cranking out killer bacteria and lazy immune systems every day. Don’t add your body and your house to the growing list of killer bacteria factories.

Antibiotics are the miracle drugs of our modern age. Imagine having a bladder infection or an ear infection or an infected cut on your arm and not having an antibiotic to treat it.

In the 1800’s, pneumonia was called “the old man’s friend” because so many elderly people afflicted with other horribly debilitating and chronic diseases died mercifully of pneumonia instead of wasting away from cancer or suffering for years with the effects of a stroke or crippled with arthritis.

Antibiotics can now cure many infections from pneumonia to ulcers. Different classes of antibiotics kill infectious bacteria in different ways, but the results are that the bacteria die and you feel better. There are bacteria in and around us at all times (one bacterium, two bacteria). Species of bacteria are much more numerous than there are people on this planet. Not all of these species of bacteria are harmful or infectious. Over millions of years, people have learned to live with most bacteria and in fact, some bacteria are the “good guys” and help us digest food or fight off the “bad guys”. Our bodies have evolved wonderfully complex and effective ways of killing bacteria and most of the time our immune systems are quite happily killing off invasions of bacteria every day.

Antibiotics are needed to kill bacteria under only a few conditions: first, when a really bad kind of bacteria like the “flesh-eating” staphylococcus gets past our defenses and gets started growing in a wound, for example. This bacterium is hanging around all the time but we fight it off routinely. If it starts growing under your skin, you need antibiotics and you need them very quickly and in large doses. Secondly, when someone’s immune system is compromised or not working very well for some reason or another like disease or surgery, then a normally friendly bacterium can start growing like crazy and completely overwhelm the body’s ability to fight it off. In that case you also need the right kind of antibiotics and lots of them.

The most common reason for a prescription for antibiotics is an invasion of a garden variety everyday bacteria like streptococcus, the kind that causes strep throat in your ten year old. Strep is everywhere. We could never hope to rid the planet of these bacteria. Most of the time when it gets into the throat of your ten-year-old, her saliva kills it. But sometimes it gets going and doesn’t stop. When this happens, she needs a prescription for antibiotics; most commonly some sort of penicillin.

…see part 2 to continue

In the last several years, more adults and children have experienced infections that are resistant to antibiotics. This has been specifically the truth for people who experience ear, nose and throat problems.

Cefdinir, an antibiotic, has been approved by the FDA in its generic form in an effort for the improvement and to remedy these infections that are resistant.

Teva Pharmaceuticals distributes and manufactures the generic form of Omnicef which is Cefdinir. Cefdinir is a partially synthetic drug that takes a two-pronged approach to battling bacterial infections. It prevents bacteria from replicating and it breaks down the protective walls surrounding the bacterial organisms. It belongs to the group of antibiotics called cephalosporin; Cefdinir currently offers adults and children a more affordable method of handling antibiotic resistant infections.

Cefdinir dosing additionally adds to the benefit of this FDA verified drug. Because the medication is administered orally, either in pill or suspension formula, kids and adults need only take one or two daily doses to treat their ear, nose and throat bacterial infections. It is common for 300 to 600 milligram prescriptions for adults, with children usually receiving 125 to 250 milligram doses.

Cefdinir has side effects, as do most FDA authorized medicines. For the most part, side effects include mild conditions such as headache, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Since Cefdinir might change the blood glucose levels, people with diabetes should make sure to watch their sugar usage when taking Cefdinir to battle a bacterial infection.

Although Cefdinir is not known to bring about complications in pregnancy, it should be prescribed with caution to pregnant women because we do not know if it will put the fetus at risk. In addition, people in kidney failure should not use Cefdinir to battle ear, nose and throat bacterial infections because the medication is excreted through the kidneys.

When afflicted with the flu, common cold or a viral sickness, Cefdinir should not be used because this FDA verified drug doesn’t work for viruses.

You may not be able to take Cefdinir if you have allergies to penicillin products such as Keflex and Ceclor.

Obtaining treatment as soon as possible is the key to ensuring a quick and satisfactory resolution to the problem, as is the case with any resistant bacterial infection. When infected with bacteria in the ear, nose or throat, ask your healthcare expert if you can use Cefdinir.

Can you explain a Urinary Tract Infection?

It is the most common infection in humans. By now you must be asking yourself how you can keep yourself from getting a UTI, the symptoms, and causes.

Urinary tract infections, also known as UTIs, can create the urge for people to frequently use the bathroom. The most typical kind of bacterial infection is a urinary tract infection, mostly occurring in females, and actually one out of two females will have a minimum of one infection in their life. It is rare for males and children to get a UTI; however, when it happens to them, the problems and outcome can be very bad. Pregnant females have a higher risk, and they must be watched very carefully for signs since being infected could cause bad problems for the mother as well as her infant, resulting in early delivery and low birth weight for the baby.

Why does a UTI happen and why does it happen so often? Generally a UTI is a urinary system infection, which includes the kidney, ureters, bladder as well as the urethra. Kidney stones, which can occlude the urinary tract, may cause the build up of toxins in the body and lead to an elevated risk of contracting a UTI. People who are immunocompromised due to a virus, diabetes, cancer or certain drugs have an increased chance of developing a UTI. Women who are sexually active face a higher probability of becoming infected, as well as men with an enlarged prostate.

What are the symptoms of a UTI? Many people have certain symptoms, but these problems are somewhat different based on if the bacteria is located in the bottom or top area of your urinary tract. You might wonder if you have a lower UTI if you feel any of the discomforting signs; it burns when you pee, you feel pressure like you have to go to the bathroom, but when you go only a little pee comes out, a lower belly ache, and maybe a slight fever. Characteristics of upper tract UTIs are worse and people who have this might have a fever with chills, vomiting, and backache.

Visit your doctor if you have any of these symptoms. If you look at your urine, it will look unclear and maybe smell bad. A midstream pee specimen should be taken and forwarded to the microbiology laboratory for proper diagnosis of the causative organism. Once the organism has been identified, antibiotic sensitivity assays should be run to ensure that the best antibiotic to kill that particular infection will be employed. If someone has an infection that is resistant to antibiotics, it is useless to prescribe them medicine to treat the infection.

Treatment depends two things – first of all using the right antibiotic for the entire course, and secondly, doing what you can to decrease UTIs in the future. You may buy Amoxicillin and nitrofuratoin are two typical antibiotics. If problems continue, another method may be required. It is basically not possible to avoid a UTI, but there are a few things that you can do to avoid or decrease becoming more infected, like drinking a minimum of 1,5L of water daily to wash away toxins and bacteria, plus empty your bladder completely when necessary instead of “holding it” for a later time. It is advised also that you regularly clean your genitals before you have sex as well as following sex. UTIs have to be taken care of promptly, since if they are not treated, it could damage the kidneys and poison the blood.

Factors that occur in aging men, such as emotional problems and decline in physical health, can contribute to erectile difficulties. These tips may be helpful for men whose problem stems from emotional issues. Otherwise, if there is a medical issue, there are current operations and help that can bring your physical health back.

What are the suggestions to help improve your sexual health?

– Energize your sexual encounters. Check into a motel or hotel. Purchase new lingerie for your wife. Do not let sex become part of a routine.
– Turn sex into a less threatening experience. There is no point in obsessing over past erectile problems.
– Masturbation may be one way to ease your anxiety regarding your sexual performance.
– Marital or relationship problems are significant factors that cause sexual problems. You must find a non-accusatory way of verbalizing your emotions.
– Do some reading of relevant materials regarding sex. They have useful knowledge to share.
– Stress can have a major detrimental impact on your performance. Get a good night’s sleep and try to find time to relax each day.
– Communicate with each other so that you are each aware of what the other would like sexually.
– Having your sexual partner become more involved in love making may provide a solution to your sexual problems.
– Avoid alcoholic beverages prior to sex because alcohol can interfere with sexual function.
– Self-confidence is important in order to have successful sexual experiences.
– There is no reason to experience guilt over sexual problems. There is nothing wrong with you.
– It doesn’t make a difference how big or small a penis is. Creativity during sex is what brings satisfaction.
– Make use of sexual fantasies during sex to enhance the experience.
– Give Viagra a try. Viagra, citrate salt of sildenafil, is an effective treatment for several health conditions.

Options for Preventing and Relieving Migraine Pain

A debilitating condition afflicting 18% to 21% of the American population, migraine headache pain can have a negative impact on society. Negatively affecting job performance, day to day routines and familial and social relations, migraine sufferers are on a ceaseless journey to find relief and to stop migraines from ever happening.

Doctors use a wide range of prescription drugs such as serotonin agonists, vasoconstrictors, anti-depressants, calcium channel blockers and basic prescription narcotics, to treat migraines. However, there is not one known treatment to cure the massive amount of people who suffer from migraines. Consequently, migraine sufferers are trying these alternative medicine strategies in an attempt to both aid and prevent migraine headache pain.

Acupuncture: While acupuncture is not a mainstream treatment for migraine pain, many find that needles applied to key nerve sites does help relieve migraine pain and seems to reduce the number of migraine episodes.

Vitamins and Supplements: In a lot of scientific studies, the link between migraine pain and digestive well being has been examined. The fascinating thing is that evidence suggests that poor digestive health might lead to a rise in the occurrence of migraine pain. Consequently, migraine sufferers have started to improve dietary amounts and now add in magnesium and Riboflavin supplements along with the herb. A non-prescription medication called MigreLief has been developed by Akeso Health Sciences which uses this triple therapy method, and should be taken every day to help prevent migraine headaches. Also, the utilization of the herb, Feverfew, in prevention, has been shown to inhibit the role of platelets in the bloodstream, lower serotonin release and slow down swelling. This, by itself, might be an effective therapeutic method to help avoid migraine pain.

With a long reputation for relieving headache pain, the utilization of cool ice packs is a familiar method to get rid of migraine pain. The tried and true method of putting ice in a bag and wrapping it in a towel has become more modernized. Two items, Migracap and BeKool are available without a prescription and offer the cooling and helpful effect of the familiar ice pack treatment. BeKool is an easy to use gel-type pack that may be applied to the forehead or nape of the neck, but MigraCap provides greater effects. You can place any of the several colors of MigraCap on your head when you have a migraine. In addition to the black lining that blocks out light, the MigraCap includes strategically positioned cool gel packs to help cool and soothe the areas that are usually affected by migraine pain.

No matter how you decide to treat your migraines, don’t overlook alternative medicine. Prescription medications are offered by online pharmacies to treat migraine pain, but using over the counter remedies may help enhance the effects of these drugs and could possibly allow a person to stop taking prescription migraine medications completely. No matter which road you choose, the final outcome could stop pain and make everyday life better for a migraine sufferer.

About 33 percent of adults have pain from arthritis. There are two types of arthritis, a painful joint inflammation, that we can suffer from: rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

The breakdown of your joint’s cartilage is called osteoarthritis. The knees, fingers, or wrists are normally affected. Joints and other body parts, like the lungs and heart, can be affected by rheumatoid arthritis. You might have a type of arthritis if you experience pain in both of your knees or wrists. This ailment hurts a lot and is very uncomfortable, possibly having a huge impact on our lives, bringing us down and making us feel miserable on our job and during our free time. But we can’t get rid of it permanently, so all we can do is relieve its signs.

For arthritis treatment, there are medications. We can take non-prescription medicines, like acetaminophen, Ibuprofen, or aspirin, but we have to beware, because if we take too much or use it for too long we can end up being sick, messing up the liver or various organs.

Prescription drugs are continually being developed. Larger doses of anti-inflammatory drugs such as Naxopren, Celebrex, Ibuprofen, or Meloxicam can be prescribed by your physician. Our hope is that scientists will soon find a safer, more effective drug for this serious condition.

Topical medicines are remedies that are applied directly to the affected joint. This includes creams such as Bengay. They help you find relief with few side effects. Steroids are commonly used in shots for the joints that hurt. They have a short-term effect and are extremely painful.

We need to be active participants in the reduction of our pain from arthritis. Our best improvement comes from relying on medication along with giving our own attention to care and exercise.

Activities that do not put pressure on the joints are excellent to help people to manage one’s weight (being obese has an influence on arthritis), and to keep your body healthy. If you consistently exercise by taking walks, stretching, or doing yoga, your arthritis will be easier to maintain. Swimming is helpful for joints, but watch out for the humidity.

Studies show that food and arthritis are related. People who decrease their fat and sugar and eat more fruit and vegetables feel better. In the treatment of arthritic patients, blood tests for the control the levels of sugar and cholesterol are often ordered by the physician. It is good to consume lots of water, as it assists in the cleansing of toxins from the body, keeping it in good health.

One common way to deal with arthritis pain is to sit in a hot bath, normally before sleeping (arthritis hurts the most when we don’t move or are asleep). We can have a regular warm bath with just water, the bubble bath liquid we love the most, or we can mix in some Epsom salts, which are a well known joint soother. Mud and eucalyptus leaves are popular additions. Prolonged soaking in the heated water, loosening up for half an hour in the warmth, is key.

Popular remedies include saunas and sunbaths. The pain and stiffness is relieved, but monitor your blood pressure before you go into saunas, don’t stay too long, and apply sunscreen any time that you lay in the sun.

Swallowing high dosages (follow directions always for taking medication) of Vitamin C is something that a lot of arthritis patients do, and a lot of them get relief. Vitamin C assists in the fight against disease and the improvement of the immune system.

Alternative medicine also makes an effort to get relief from arthritis pain, by applying homeopathy, herbs, aromas or acupuncture. The decision is up to each person to use every treatment out there to help their pain, but it is necessary to look around and have a consultation before you do anything, since there aren’t any promises when you use these treatments.

Lavender, chamomile, eucalyptus, juniper, and a lot more herbs can be used. Apply them to the affected body parts by mixing them with oils and making compresses.

There are some drinks that are known as remedies for arthritis pain, like a mixture of orange juice and cod oil, or cranberry or lemon juice can be drunk three times each day. Regularly eating a large proportion of colorful produce is usually beneficial.

We believe one day we will find the best medicine or relief for arthritis pain, or something greater, like a real solution. Until this time, we will try all of the available remedies that are not dangerous, because to live having pain is like having no life at all.

Causes

Yeast infections can be caused by a variety of things. A yeast infection can be caused by new yeast entering the vaginal area. A yeast infection, however, can occur when the amount of yeast which already exists in the vagina increases. Antibiotics taken for other ailments may result in a yeast infection. In the instance where the inner vagina is harmed (potential side effect of chemotherapy), a woman may develop a vulnerability to yeast infections also. Women who are taking birth control pills, are pregnant, have a suppressed immune system or have diabetes mellitus have a greater chance of contracting a yeast infection than other women.

Yeast infections can be contracted by any woman – even those who are not sexually active; yeast infections are not sexually transmitted diseases. Notwithstanding, every so often when a man has a sexual encounter with a woman with a yeast infection, he may end up with a yeast infection on his penis with the resultant discomfort.

Symptoms

The occurrence of symptoms of yeast infection does not signify, as a matter of fact, the presence of a yeast infection. Many other conditions have symptoms which are similar to the symptoms of yeast infections. The best course of action is to get a professional diagnosis from a physician.

Itching of the vagina or vulva (the female genitalia’s external part), is the primary symptom when you have a yeast infection. Other symptoms which may occur with yeast infections include: soreness, pain during urination and during intercourse, a burning sensation, and vaginal discharge. Vaginal discharge has no odor, it is white and appears thick, somewhat like cottage cheese.

Yeast infections can recur in up to 8% of women. When women have four or more yeast infections within a year which are unrelated to antibiotics, these yeast infections are considered as recurring. There may be an underlying condition in women who have recurring yeast infections.

Treatment

Anti-fungal drugs are the usual treatment for yeast infections. A number are used topically — in other words, on the surface. Topical medications are administered on and inside the vagina. Oral anti-fungal medications can also be used.

It may be necessary to take more than one kind of medication if there is more than one kind of microbe present. Clotrimazole (Lotrimin), miconazole (Monistat), butoconazole (Femstat 3), and terconazole (Terazol 3) are some of the anti fungal creams. Fluconazole (Diflucan) is the oral medication most commonly given to cure yeast infections. Doctors generally like to give prescriptions for topical medication rather than oral medication for the treatment of yeast infections. Oral drugs can have side effects such as nausea, headache, and abdominal pain, and should not be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Side effects rarely occur with topical medications.

Medication purchased over-the-counter can be used to treat yeast infections. If symptoms continue unabated though, a doctor’s opinion should be sought out to ensure that there is no other problem than the yeast infection. Chlamydia, vaginosis and gonorrhea are other conditions which may be confused with yeast infections, since they have some of the same symptoms.

If I don’t have a prescription, where would I be able to purchase Diflucan?

Fluconazole can be obtained with a prescription, and it is available in 200 mg, 150 mg, 100 mg, and 50 mg tablets. If is offered as tablets for oral use with a prescription; nevertheless, the online drugstore will allow a Fluconazole order with the absence of a prescription. Local pharmacies add a markup to products, so it may be possible to order Diflucan from these pharmacies and save this money.

Is it legal to buy Diflucan online?

Yes, this is a legal product. It is legal as long as you assert that you are only buying Diflucan for your personal use and are not purchasing it for resale. In most countries, medicines are approved for personal use. Generic Fluconazole will probably pass custom inspections, including in America, with no issues. If you experience any issues with customs, just let the pharmacy know and they will give you another Fluconazole order at no charge.

What do I do when I’m making my first purchase of Diflucan online?

First, check pharmacies in your area and compare prices; you will find reduced prices for generic Diflucan at any drugstore. Following that, you can go online to buy Fluconazole.
